Punteggio 100/100 · Da bere 2020-2038, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Feb 2021

A blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the 2014 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain comes from a cooler site in south Napa, above a quarry. It usually allows for a longer hang time, often lending a minty or herbal lift to the wine. Deep garnet in color, the nose of the 2014 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain opens with intense scents of stewed black cherries, kirsch, blackberry preserves and baked plums with hints of dried Provence herbs, pencil shavings and olives with a waft lavender. The firmly textured, full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, packed with energetic, muscular black fruit and finishing long and vibrant.

The 2014 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain, a blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, is striking. Bright acids, along with considerable aromatic intensity from the Cabernet Franc give the wine its distinctive, bright personality. Lifted, expressive aromatics and bold, red-toned fruit are some of the signatures in this very pretty, compelling wine from Russell Bevan and Victoria De Crescenzo.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Sugarloaf Mountain might not hit the perfect score of the Proprietary Red, but it is a great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with the classic hallmark of unsmoked cigar tobacco, barbecue, charcoal embers, blackberry, cassis and loamy soil undertones. Opaque purple, fabulously full-bodied with awesome purity and richness, this is another stunner from Russell Bevan.
