Fragrant and extrovert on the nose, then quite tightly packed on the palate. Firm tannin too. Very good, with the signature generosity of their other Marsannays – but not significantly better, though it is twice the price! (RH)

The 2015 Marsannay L'Ancestrale has a voluminous bouquet with layer upon layer of blackberry, mulberry, hoisin and pastille-like aromas, just a hint of peppermint emerging with aeration and later a hint of fresh fig that lends a touch of exoticism. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine acidity, very well balanced with great depth and vigor on the finish that seems...effortless.
(from a mix of vines that range from 60 to 80 years of age). Interestingly this is aromatically quite similar to the Le Chapître if perhaps slightly riper. Otherwise there is outstanding concentration and focused power to the caressing middle weight flavors that exude a lovely minerality onto the dense, serious and moderately austere finish that displays very fine length. This is quite an impressive villages and one that is clearly built-to-age. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
