The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a powerful, smudged, rather oppressive bouquet that lacks subtlety and seems to be dominated by the growing season (one of the few in this appellation to be so). The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a slight metallic taint and a short, rather abrupt finish that displays too much wood tannin. Agh... this was so impressive out of barrel, but this is perplexing. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Bright, dark red. Captivating scents of raspberry, blackberry, dried flowers, violet and musky stone. Fat, plush and sweet but laid-back, conveying terrific saline depth and harmonious framing acidity to its dark berry and licorice flavors. Not nearly as open in the mouth as it is on the nose; in fact, this is a baby today. Finishes with serious, broad, fine-grained tannins and lovely lift for the vintage.
Cask sample. Crunchy, tight black fruit, sweet but with a savoury snap to finish. Chinese spice aromas. Malleable tannin, fragrant palate. (RH)
