The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Chaignots 1er Cru has a slightly awkward bouquet compared to its peers; pencil shavings and a slight vegetal note clash with the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, stringy tannin, a little bucolic within the context of the vintage, and missing some depth toward the bitter finish. Does it have more up its sleeve or is this bottle slightly tainted? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Medium red. Complex, soil-driven scents of raspberry, smoke, pepper, rose petal and dried herbs. Dense, smooth and quite dry; offers good breadth but quite withdrawn in the early going, showing limited fruit sweetness and a bit dominated by its firm tannic spine. Fairly intense black cherry, menthol and peppery herbs throughout. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins that will need patience.
Cask sample. Bright fruit and very correct and precise though with no shortage of acidity in evidence. Lots of smooth, ripe fruit though. Ticks the boxes. Very clean. (JR)
