Punteggio 92-95/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Dec 2016

Bright red-ruby. A touch of reduction but also excellent lift to the aromas of black raspberry and dark chocolate. Fine-grained, dense and deep but also light on its feet, with intense cassis and blackberry fruit flavors lifted on the finish by mineral and violet notes. There's an awfully lot going on here. The wine's firm tannins arrive late, allowing its exhilarating, sappy fruit to build. As with the Cailles and Vaucrains, the crop level here was around 25 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2015 Nuits Saint George's 1er Cru Les Saint Georges was showing a touch of reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. That made the nose hard to read, but the palate showed superb concentration and more density than Chevillons other premier crus, whilst there was clearly firm backbone and a long, mineral-driven finish that lingered in the mouth for a over a minute. There is great potential here, although I wonder if it might ultimately be eclipsed by the superlative Les Vaucrains? What a joy to discover!

(from a .60 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). This is also aromatically wonderfully elegant and highly complex as it mingles notes of wood spice, earth, sauvage, red currant and a hint of forest floor. While the middle weight plus flavors are not quite as refined as those of the Cailles, they still are sleekly muscular and intense with excellent supporting material along with a very firm tannic spine on the slightly austere and mineral-driven finish. Like the Vaucrains, this is reference standard stuff and worthy of a special search to find and cellar. Dec 2016, www.burghound.com
