Punteggio 90+/100 · Da bere 2021-2040, Neal Martin, Nov 2018

The 2015 Beaune Grèves Vignes de L’Enfant Jésus 1er Cru is one of Bouchard's finest Premier Crus, and given past experience, I think I just caught this at the wrong moment. It is missing some energy on the nose, lacking the vivacity and brightness conveyed by four other wines from this vineyard tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with quite bold and grippy tannin that lends it volume and mass. However, it lacks some detail and sophistication and comes across rather monochromatic on the finish. Allow this three or four years in bottle and I am certain that it will regain charm and personality. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is very successful in 2015, offering up a very black-fruity bouquet of crushed cassis, red cherry, caramelized orange, asphalt and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is concentrated, intense and full-bodied, with sappy acidity and considerable length, its fine-grained tannins asserting themselves on the firm, grippy finish. While this is currently rather primary, its raw materials are impressive and it should develop very well: tellingly, an open bottle improved over several days.

Bright, dark red. Pure, perfumed aromas of blackberry, menthol, violet and licorice, with a note of blood orange emerging with air. Rich, tactile, seamless and deep; seriously ripe but vibrant wine with strong medicinal reserve to its densely packed flavors of black cherry, dark berries, spices, licorice and minerals. Darker in its flavor profile than the Clos de la Mousse and distinctly firmer and more structured than that wine; no easy sweetness in this zesty Beaune wine. Finishes with a serious dusting of fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Still a bit youthfully withdrawn, this wine will need at least a few years in bottle to expand. But a very strong vintage for this cuvée --and built for a graceful evolution in bottle.
