Punteggio 94/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

Bright medium ruby. Aromas of plum and coffee show a faintly roasted aspect but lovely complexity. Silky and creamy but with captivating inner-mouth savory lift giving shape and an element of delicacy and restraint to the middle palate. Superconcentrated flavors of red berries and dried flowers display subtle sweetness and sexy saline tension. Finishes with refined tannins and outstanding perfumed persistence. It would be a shame to open this beauty too soon.

The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the "Combe d'Orveau" lieu-dit, is usually one of the first to be picked, as the soils can suffer drought. It has a crisp, dark cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet, hints of damp moss developing, the 40% whole cluster nicely integrated and lending freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gently gripping the mouth with notes of raspberry, mulberry and sea salt. It does feel a little conservative compared to other 2015s that I have tasted, though it is undeniably proportioned and focused. I would just like more personality to be conveyed, though I wager that will develop with requisite cellaring.

(from south-facing vines on a steep chalky slope in the lieu-dit en Orveaux; harvested very early in 2015 and vinified with 40% whole clusters): Dark red with ruby tones. Medicinal aromas of black cherry, coffee and chocolate complicated by an enticing floral nuance. Very suave and smooth but not especially sweet, with its ripe chocolate cake and blackberry preserve flavors leavened by salty minerality and a strong impression of soil. More airy and energetic in the mouth than the Suchots despite its almost voluptuous texture. Finishes very long, with polished, late-arriving tannins.
