Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2019-2029, Neal Martin, Nov 2018

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru is showing a lot of reduction on the nose, obfuscating the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin and moderate acidity, and quite oaky in style, which makes it rather generic on the finish. The oak becomes more marked with aeration and the winemaking feels heavy-handed. This could be better. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Bright dark red. Musky scents of candied raspberry and pomegranate show superb energy along with a liqueur-like ripeness. Silky-sweet and highly concentrated; a bit darker in the mouth than on the nose, offering berry, dark cherry and spicy oak flavors. Can't quite match the young 2016 for class, as this wine gives an impression of faster ripeness. Finishes a bit aggressive but with good mineral energy and medicinal reserve. Bernstein's 2015s are slightly higher in pH than his '16s.

This has been from his own vines since 2012. Dark crimson. A bit reduced. Lighter than one would expect on the palate. Very racy indeed! Possibly too much whole bunch? Looking for freshness and delicacy now, he says. But I’d say it still has to take on a bit more flesh. (JR)
