Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2024-2038, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2024

The 2014 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is a different animal altogether, with a rich blend of plum sauce, balsamic spices, mentholated herbs, dried black cherries and dusty earth. This displays textures of pure silk, lifted and refined with crunchy minerality and crisp wild berry fruits that cascade throughout. Violet inner florals resonate as the 2014 leaves a coating of edgy tannins, but a tart blackberry concentration balances things out. Even though 2014 was as a cold and rainy vintage, Vulture was able to succeed due to the late harvest of Aglianico, which took place at the beginning of November.

14 to 15 days on the skins. ‘Non mi piace la macerazione spinta’, says winemaker Elena (I don’t like skin maceration pushed to the extreme). So this only stays on the skins for as long as the alcoholic fermentation lasts. Mid ruby. Classic Aglianico nose with wonderful racy, dark fruit on the palate with bags of coating tannins. It all strikes a great balance. Apparently this is aged in 50% new barrique, but hardly noticeable. (WS)

Elena Fucci does a great job of turning the tables on this notoriously difficult vintage. The 2014 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo offers much more substance and power than I expected. Many wines from this growing season are considerably leaner and thinner, but this wine presents a level of intensity that is more intact than most. The nose is very clean and characterized by primary fruit aromas, which makes sense given the youthfulness of this new release. Only on the finish can you recognize some of the difficulties of the vintage. The mouthfeel shows less complexity and a more abrupt finish. Elena Fucci tells me she worked extra hard in this vintage and remains happy with the results achieved.

Bright purple-ruby. Aromas and flavors of dark plum, black cherry and sweet spices are complemented by a strong balsamic note. Bright and juicy, with a lovely mineral tang and harmonious acidity lifting the steely red fruit flavors and extending them through a long floral finish. Outstanding wine. The 2014 vintage was a very rainy one throughout Italy, but it was not so wet on the Vulture, where late harvests mean that summer rains are less damaging than elsewhere in the country (the veraison doesn’t even start in the Vulture until September).
