The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes was picked between 5-9 October, according to Esmonin. This opens nicely in the glass with red berry fruit, Moroccan spice and a very light and attractive Wellington boot aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. A little "chunky" perhaps, yet the acidity keeps it on the straight and narrow with a pleasant sappy finish. Drink over the next decade.

Bright, dark red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the basic village offering, showing more torrefaction today but less primary fruit. A step up in intensity and depth but more austere and soil-driven. Delivers a lovely combination of finesse and energy and finishes with substantial fine, dusty tannins.
(50% new oak; 50% whole clusters; this wine only finished its malolactic fermentation in October): Bright red with ruby tones. Reticent, brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Denser, richer and sweeter than the regular village Gevrey but more backward and imploded today, showing almost painfully austere flavors of blackberry, herbs and licorice. A highly promising village wine but I wouldn't go near this for at least five years.
The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, which contains 50% whole-bunch fruit was the last to finish its malolactic fermentation during September, matured in 50% new oak. It appears to possess more richness on the nose than the regular Gevrey Village with small black cherries intermingling with blueberry and sea-spray scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is harmonious and focused, tightly wound, but very pure and silky smooth on the finish. Very fine, but it will need 5 or 6 years to reach its plateau of maturity.
