Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2016

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru had a rather anonymous nose, perhaps closed down, tight-lipped and unresponsive. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin, slightly dry and foursquare with some attenuation and bitterness towards the finish. This is a disappointing showing and I will seek to re-evaluate it later. Tasted September 2016.

(totally destemmed): Deep, bright red. Candied black cherry and licorice on the nose, along with a funky note of reduction. Very ripe but tight-grained, boasting excellent intensity to the rather muscular black cherry and pepper flavors. Strong juicy fruit here but very tannic and dominated by its structure in the early going. The peppery quality carries through on the aftertaste, giving the wine a faint dry edge. This will require extended cellaring.

The 2013 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is fully destemmed and has a perfumed and quite floral nose, the additional pigeage extracting more ripe strawberry and kirsch scents. The palate is medium-bodied with well-judged acidity and it just eases off toward the finish that is elegant, but I feel needs to develop a little more weight.
