Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2020-2036, Jeb Dunnuck, Jun 2020

The 2014 Chateau Tour Saint Christophe is pure class and shows the elegant, balanced style of this vintage beautifully. A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, its deeper ruby/purple color is followed by a great nose of blackcurrant and black cherry-like fruits as well as notes of leafy tobacco, violets, truffle, and hints of damp earth. It shows the medium-bodied style of the vintage on the palate, yet has impressive concentration as well as mid-palate depth, great tannins, and nicely integrated acidity, all of which come together nicely on the finish. This classic, balanced Saint-Emilion is approachable today yet will evolve for another 15+ years or more in cold cellars.

The 2014 Tour Saint-Christophe comes from Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, the lieu-dit Cassevert, where proprietor Peter Kwok has built some quite startling terraces on the slope to improve the terroir (apparently recruited from Spain as only they possess the technical know-how). My, what a Saint Emilion this is. It has a very well-defined bouquet with crisp, pure mineral-rich red and black fruit. I like the focus here; there is an intention to perform at the top level that comes through where it matters—in the glass. The palate is silky smooth with a fine line of acidity, layers of red cherry and blueberry fruit, leading to a detailed and very satisfying, long finish. This 2014 serves notice of a new, bright kid on the block.
