Healthy dark red. Lovely violet lift to the dark aromas of blackberry, licorice and pepper. Concentrated, sappy and saline, with vibrant black fruit and spice flavors complicated by sexy saline soil tones and a note of espresso. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and excellent rising length. This, too, is very backward today, even a bit youthfully musclebound.

Cool and bracing, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux boasts notable precision throughout. Today, the Corbeaux comes across as a bit austere next to some of the other wines in the range, which is not surprising for a cool site in a late-ripening vintage, but it does mean readers will have to be patient. Suggestions of sweet tobacco, cedar, mint and leather add the final shades of nuance.
Bright, deep red with ruby highlights. Precise aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate, plus a suggestion of smoked meat. A step up in volume and sweetness from the Evocelles but in a distinctly virile style, with the black fruit and espresso flavors coming across as extremely primary today. Finishes youthfully clenched, with a suggestion of game. This will require patience.
The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Corbeaux has a more “airy” and perhaps more floral, feminine bouquet compared with the nascent Les Evocelles ’13. The fruit here leans a little more to the red side of the spectrum rather than black. The palate is structured and more masculine than the Les Evocelles. Beneath the mineral-rich black fruit lurks quite rigid, almost obdurate tannins, although there is superb tension in situ and the grip is almost gentle on the finish. This is the kind of Gevrey then sends tiny ripples of excitement down your back.
