Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2016-2050, David Schildknecht, Vinous, May 2016

Like its BA counterpart a 300-bottle selection, this is predictably even darker in color, and accentuates the sorghum, maple syrup and chestnut honey already familiar from that sibling. Piquant maraschino cherry and varnish-like volatility are not really off-putting; in fact, the sense of cut they engender offers welcome counterpoint to the wine’s overall caramelization and extreme sweetness, as do cooling mint and smoky black tea infusions. Bitterness of candied orange and grapefruit rinds along with a strikingly intense streak of salinity serve to further check the effects of an astonishing 350 grams of residual sugar in a prodigious, mouthwatering finish that left me licking my lips and craving the next viscous, improbably invigorating sip.

Gold to amber-colored, the 2014 Haardter Herzog Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese shows a very clear, precise, highly intense, concentrated, spicy and slightly smoky bouquet with black bread, honey and cooked peach aromas along with oriental spices, Black Forest speck flavors, great finesse and complexity. Highly elegant, vivacious and nobly sweet on the palate, this is a superbly balanced and remarkably delicate, finesse-full TBA of great elegance that will age for decades. This is doubtlessly one of the most beautiful Rieslaner TBAs I have ever tasted.
