Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2024-2036, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Marquis d'Alesme has one of the better aromatics among the Margaux 2014s, fresher with black cherries, blueberry and violet scents, brown spices and leather notes emerging with time. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, well-balanced with a liberal sprinkling of white pepper towards the finish. Very fine. Tasted non-blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Showing depth and character, waves of fragrant crushed roses on the opening aromatics, along with blueberry and blackberry fruits. Tannins are clear but extremely fine and precise, and the mouthwateringly saline character is hard to resist. Excellent, still young, needs another few years to fully soften although a good carafe should do the job if you want to drink sooner. Harvest September 19 to October 17. 60% new oak. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director and CEO, owner Nathalie Perrodo. 18 months in barrel and then four months in stainless steel and oak vats, giving in total around 23 months between picking and bottling.

The 2014 Marquis d’Alesme has a refined and focused bouquet with irresistible black fruit intermingling with brine, cedar and cigar box aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, brisk and tensile with beautifully judged acidity and neatly sutured new oak. This is very graceful and yet it does not stint on fruit and feels long on the finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Some inkiness and rather a lack of fruit. Austere and dry. (JR)
