Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2016-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2015

(from Red Mountain and Horse Heaven Hills; aged in 30% new and 70% once-used French oak barrels for 15 months): Healthy red-ruby. Cool aromas and flavors of kirsch , bitter chocolate, espresso, menthol, graphite and brown spices. Not especially thick or fleshy but juicy and brisk. I'd give this wine a year for its acids and tannins to fully harmonize but this is a bottling for relatively early consumption. Finishes with a strong torrefaction quality. Betz notes that the Cuvee Frangin is the winery's largest bottling, adding that "all the others have shrunk. And we still bulk out additional wine that does not make this blend."

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2015-2023, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Jun 2015

Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah and aged 15 months in 30% new French oak, the 2013 Cuvee Frangin is a terrific value that gives lots of Betz character in its ripe blackberry fruit, violets, wild herb and underbrush aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and downright pretty, it's delicious now, but should evolve gracefully as well.
