Very perfumed and bright with cherries, currants and shaved chocolate. Medium body and velvety and silky tannins. Juicy and very pretty. Just a hint of walnuts. Lovely. Drink now.

The 2014 Grand Village has a crisp and focused bouquet with mulberry and raspberry preserve aromas, blackcurrant emerging with time alongside melted tar. I appreciate the freshness locked into these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin on the entry, quite strict and linear with a gritty, slightly tarry finish. It does not quite have the persistence or perhaps charm of the best Grand Village I have tasted, but it will give plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade.

Mid bright crimson. It’s desperately trying to stand out from the crowd, and I’m sure it sees some better (old) wood than its peers. But you can’t magic it into the cru classé division. Solid and chunky with some chestnut peel on the finish. It’s not industrial but I think I’d go for Ch La Chenade for value – it’s sweeter. (JR)
