(fermented in French oak and concrete tanks, followed by 16 months in French oak barriques , 40% of them new): Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, spice-accented aromas of cherry and candied raspberry are complicated by a smoky mineral nuance and a building floral element. Pliant red berry and cherry-cola flavors show a refreshing bitterness, with an exotic hint of five-spice powder gaining intensity as the wine opens in the glass. Closes gently tannic, with noteworthy energy and thrust, leaving notes of spicecake and cherry-cola behind. As fancy Ribera del Dueros go, this is an awfully good value.

There were some mineral, diesel-like aromas in the 2012 Dominio de Atauta, with echoes of toasted cereals over a core of ripe cherries, making for a nicely balanced nose with integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied, also balanced and with fine tannins. It feels like a nice Tempranillo. 45,000 bottles.
Tempranillo. Pre-phylloxera vineyards located in Atauta Valley in Soria province. Clay and sandy soils on a calcareous bedrock. Aged for 16 months in French oak. Intense and captivating nose displaying dark cherries, toast, sweet oak and spice. Very good balance with firm but not disproportionate tannins combined with juiciness and savouriness. Firm and solid but still smooth. Very good quality and potential ahead. (FC)
