Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2019-2036, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2019

Healthy medium red; not as dark as the '15. Spicy red fruits, menthol and musky soil tones on the expressive nose, along with the salty aspect of this vintage. Fine-grained, floral and mineral-driven, conveying terrific cut to its strawberry, raspberry and blood orange fruit flavors. But owing to its strong saline minerality, this dense but juicy wine is about much more than primary fruit and is already long on personality. More savory and refined than the very young 2015 if not nearly as massive as that wine. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a lingering spice element. (12.9% alcohol; 3.7 pH, 42 hl/h; harvested on September 21)

Mid ruby. Now this smells like wonderfully relaxed real wine! Already complex and artisanal rather than of winemaking. Really captivating. Bright ripe red fruits (cherries? plums?) in great balance with the acid (low) and tannins (light). Not that intense but in perfect balance. (JR)

(these vines were 60 years old in 2014): Bright medium red; like the Ruchottes-Chambertin, not hugely saturated or dark. Distinctly darker on the nose than the Ruchottes, offering aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and smoky oak lifted by floral and crushed-stone nuances. Densely packed but weightless, conveying a wonderfully silky, seamless texture. Intense flavors of raspberry, licorice and wild herbs are lifted by high notes of rose petal and blood orange. Finishes savory and very long, with firm but harmonious tannins and captivating lingering perfume. One of the best and most refined Clos Vougeots I tasted from this vintage.

The 2014 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a more backward nose compared to the Ruchottes-Chambertin with blackberry, raspberry and incense notes that begin to open with aeration. The palate is supremely well balanced, here the oak a little more noticeable than the Ruchottes, but there is enough fruit to support it, hints of spicebox and orange zest towards the finish. This is beautifully crafted Clos de Vougeot that will be difficult to resist in its flush of youth, yet will certainly reward cellaring.
