Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2019-2035, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Oct 2017

Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru from Rossignol-Trapet has one of the most austere and backward bouquets among the septet of Chambertins. This demands coaxing and reluctantly offers blackberry, cranberry, smoke and damp undergrowth notes. But it is not as vivid as its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm grip, a demonstrative Chambertin and yet unlike Armand Rousseau's Chambertin tasted alongside, it does not quite deliver the payload of complexity and intensity on the final third. It starts so well and then it leaves you wanting more. Tasted September 2017.

Here too there is a discreet application of wood that easily allows the ripe and fresh aromas of plum, earth, violet, humus and sauvage hints to be appreciated. There is excellent power, muscle and volume to the intensely mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that culminate in a serious, driving and explosively long finish that is very firmly structured and unapologetically built for long-term cellaring. In brief, this is seriously impressive.

Mid cherry red. More peppery and spicy than the Chapelle-Chambertin. Caressingly fine, dry tannins softened by the pretty fruit. Lovely restraint allied with real persistence. Delicious. (JH)

(45% new oak): Good dark red. Mellow aromas of plum, redcurrant, flowers, mocha, coffee and spicy oak. The most complete of these 2014s; rich, round and silky but with a firm spine of stony minerality. Savory and juicy in the mid-palate, conveying lovely mineral energy to the pure flavors of dark raspberry and flowers. Finishes firmly tannic but not dry.
