ID 314056. Disgorged summer 2014. Second release. 40% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 23% Pinot Meunier. The weather in 1990 was somehow classic: a very mild winter with no snow, followed by sharp frosts in early April and a spell of lighter frosts later in the month. Now over 25 years in the cellar. Just 6,586 bottles were kept in the cellars and each is individually numbered. Tasted blind. Pale bronze. Lots of magnificent decay here on the nose. Relatively rich with low acid. Broad and very fully evolved. Rather sweet. 1989? Not that fresh overall – perhaps a badly stored bottle? (JR)

Krug's just-released 1990 Collection is magnificent. Remarkably fresh for a 26 year-old wine, the 1990 Collection captures the Krug house style at its very best. Floral notes meld into hints of apricot, chamomile, orchard fruit, vanillin and sweet spices. On the palate, the 1990 is creamy, vivid and super-expressive, but what is most intriguing is how fresh the Collection is relative to Vintage Champagne, which has always been a heavier, more oxidative wine. Readers who can find the 1990 should not hesitate, as it is stellar.
