The 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru is slightly deeper in color than the Clos-de-Bèze, dark berry fruit laced with soy, undergrowth, a splash of Hoisin and truffle - all very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe black fruit, gently gripping the mouth, a cheeky touch of Szechuan pepper leaving the senses tingling long after it has departed. This is a lovely Chambertin, although perhaps the Clos-de-Bèze has the edge in terms of its sheer class.

Good bright, dark red. Aromas of kirsch , menthol and underbrush show a ripe chocolatey quality as well as a pronounced medicinal reserve. Highly concentrated and tightly wound, conveying a distinctly cool aspect to the densely packed flavors of black cherry, licorice and minerals. Delivers a rare combination of saline soil tones and inner-mouth definition and lift. Finishes very young and very long, with serious tannins perfectly buffered by the wine's tactile extract.

Seven pièces from two people who make Chambertin. They sell because Bellene pays more than they get on export markets. Very dark crimson. Making only the best. Sumptuous nose – very heady. Juicy and dense. Not the densest Chambertin. But very fresh. Treacle note and masses of acidity. (JR)
