The 2014 Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru, matured in two-thirds new oak, has an incredibly powerful and pure bouquet that already possesses dizzying, seductive intensity. Wow. The palate has a satin-like texture, perfect acidity and filigree tannin. However, it is the purity of this wine and the shimmering tension on the finish that is totally entrancing. One of the wines of the vintage? Most certainly. Bravo Sebastien.

The Romanee Saint-Vivant is refinement and delicacy personified … or is it pinotified? This is one of the most refined and delicate red 2014s I have tasted … despite its considerable intensity and concentration. The nose is offering layers of pure and transparent cool red fruit … beautifully brought forward by the refined terroir … a bit shy but displaying extraordinary complexity and detail. On the palate very refined and silky … in a cool and focused way. Beautifully balanced with tremendous finesse and an almost regal delicacy – a bit understated and effortless … but clearly the best wine I have tasted from Cathiard so far. Chapeau Sebastien! This is also notably reduced. The middle weight plus flavors are decidedly finer than those of the Malconsorts due to the super sleek tannins that contribute to the lilting mouth feel, all wrapped in a restrained, understated and superbly classy finish that just goes on and on. This is a wine of harmony and finesse that is beautifully balanced and should amply reward extended aging. This is quite simply gorgeous. Jan 2016, www.burghound.com, Drink: 2029+
