2014 Bonnes Mares

The 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru has a very succinct bouquet with red plum and blueberry fruit that are nicely defined, the oak nicely integrated, though not as extroverted as other Bonnes-Mares that I have tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, supple tannin. I like the acidity here, although it remains surprisingly linear and contained on the finish when you are anticipating that "peacock's tail" that flourishes, as one associates with Bonnes-Mares. Perhaps too well behaved at the moment? Hopefully it will let its hair down with bottle age.

This is almost always one of Jadot’s best wines and so it is again in 2014 with its softly spicy nose that combines notes of sandalwood and earth with those of both red and dark berries and a discreet application of oak. There is excellent richness, size, weight and power to the full-bodied and admirably concentrated flavors that are shaped by a very firm tannic spine on the hugely long, austere and beautifully well-balanced finale.
