Punteggio 91+/100 · Da bere 2023-2034, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

Deep red with ruby tones. Distinctly darker on the nose than the Vosne villages , offering scents of black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice and game. Silky and rich but not yet sweet, conveying an impression of volume without weight. Best today on the subtle, slowly building finish. This will need time.

Punteggio 91-94/100 · Da bere 2024-2035, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2015

(the yield was 18 hectoliters per hectare, from 80-year-old vines in Cruots, Vignes Blanches, Treux and Clos Saint-Denis): Bright, dark red. Ripe but reduced aromas of dark raspberry and black cherry. Rich and densely packed, with a strong saline character contributing to a chewy texture. This broad, sweet, very long Echézeaux finishes with substantial tannic structure but no hardness.

The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured in 100% new oak. The nose is dark and broody, but very well defined and unfurls with hints of iodine and seaweed. The new wood is clearly well integrated and allows the terroir to shine through. The palate is vivacious and bounds along with energy that permeates through the blackberry, boysenberry, mineral and crushed violets notes, then with aeration, along comes a note of kirsch. This is well structured and contains so much energy on the finish that it might well turn out to be Emmanuel’s best contribution to the 2013 vintage.
