Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet, mainly red berry fruit with a touch of blackberry developing in the glass, the oak neatly interwoven and a conspicuous floral aspect emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity, very focused and linear but with good precision on the almost Latricières-like finish. This is a commendable if slightly unexciting Charmes-Chambertin, but it should repay bottle age. Tasted September 2016.

Deep ruby-red color. Smells sweeter than the Cazetiers, with slightly medicinal black cherry, licorice and violet aromas showing subtle pepper and herb notes. Very rich in the mouth but without any loss of the energy promised by the nose. Boasts terrific floral perfume to the spicy dark berry and black cherry flavors. Production here was less than 25 hectoliters per hectare in 2013, according to winemaker Frédérique Bachotet. Saline, savory and smooth; not overly sweet but the deepest and most tactile of these 2013s, not to mention the longest.
More delicate, aromatically, than the premiers crus – which of course is a sign of true pedigree. The structure is spot on. Just a touch short for grand cru. (AH)
Bright, deep red. Ethereal, slightly high-toned nose combines black cherry, violet, rose petal, crushed stone and sexy smoky oak. Boasts a lovely silky red berry sweetness but a strong underlying rocky quality gives the wine a touch of austerity. Atypically, this is less fat in the early going than the Cazetiers, but its substantial tannins are more refined. Most impressive today on the rising finish, which displays compelling clarity and lift. Four barrels of this juice are from Mazoyères and three from Charmes.
