Punteggio 90-92/100 · Da bere 2018-2033, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2015

Lavender, cloves, new leather, licorice and a host of blue/purplish fruits emerge from the 2013 Chapelle-Chambertin. Powerful and sinewy, the 2013 offers terrific energy, but less textural richness and overall volume than most years. The tannins remain firm throughout and will require bottle age to soften.

Bright, dark red. Distinctly darker fruits on the nose than the Charmes or Griottes, along with a torrefaction note of espresso. Then fat but brooding on the palate, showing a medicinal reserve to the flavors of maraschino cherry and menthol. Finishes with substantial tannins that will require patience. With its powerful structure, this wine comes off as a bit brutish in the context of this collection, but time in bottle should soften its edges.

There is 1¾ barrels of the 2013 Chapelle-Chambertin this year. Like the Charmes-Chambertin '13, there is a marine influence on the nose that lends this so much character and intrigue. While it was sloshing around in my mouth, my mind raced ahead wondering what will it be like in bottle? The palate is very well balanced, nicely poised, with strawberry, red cherries and candied orange peel. This has an effervescent quality, real energy towards the finish. This is an "athletic" Chapelle-Chambertin that should enchant once in bottle.
