The 2006 Extra Brut Le Léon, 100% Pinot Noir from a parcel typically used for the 1522, is in a gorgeous spot today. Pear, chalk, mint, white pepper and ginger give the 2016 a decidedly exotic profile that is so appealing. All of the energy of Aÿ comes through in a delicate, sculpted Pinot that sizzles with tension. I would prefer to drink this over the next few years, as the fruit is starting to drop out. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: December, 2015.

The 2006 Extra Brut Grand Cru Le Léon is powerful and intense, but I don't see enough fruit or mid-palate richness to stand up to the winemaking choices. In particular, the dosage of 4.5 grams/liter appears too low. There is good persistence, but the 2006 never really fills out, which means the qualities of this Aÿ site never fully come through.
Rich, ample and broad on the palate, the 2006 Aÿ Le Léon blossoms beautifully in the glass. White pepper, spices and expressive, generous fruit flesh out nicely. This supple, resonant wine is another excellent choice for drinking over the near and medium term. This is another fairly open, expressive wine that will drink well upon release.
