The 1955 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru would be a perfect wine if it weren't for a touch of volatile phenols that lend an animal inflection to an otherwise delightful bouquet of ripe, macerated red fruits, petals and spices. It is full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with terrific density at the core and suave, melted tannins, but unfortunately, the somewhat feral qualities persist on the finish. It's a reminder that Brettanomyces is nothing new in Burgundy. My score is somewhat hypothetical, as whether one can appreciate the wine for its merits and put its faults to one side will depends on one's taste and threshold of perception.

Amazingly, still very much alive – and still a tad severe. But the vineyard will out. You can really taste that this is a de Vogüé Musigny with great structure and line. Not that much flesh to speak of but a fine intellectual challenge for a taster. (JR)
