Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2022-2032, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

Healthy medium red. Red and black cherry, licorice and spices on the nose, complicated by wild touches of earth and leather and a whiff of pepper. Juicy, spicy and firm; less sweet and rich than the 2014 but also less evolved. In fact, this energetic Clos Vougeot is downright primary today, showing a medicinal touch of menthol to its black cherry, licorice and herb flavors. Tannins are refined but serious, calling for cellaring. Classic, ageworthy Clos Vougeot.

Tasted blind at Fine & Rare Wines' Clos Vougeot tasting, the 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Jacques Prieur has a nicely defined bouquet, the oak neatly embroidered into the raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, even a faint scent of lavender poking its head up after a few minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin on the entry. But it feels balanced and edgy towards the finish, with a tang of spice lingering on the aftertaste. Fine.

Tasted blind. Dark blueish crimson. Light rather than intense with quite edgy acidity. I find this just a bit too brutal – tannins trump fruit. Tough finish. (JR)

A more restrained but equally complex nose offers up notes of ripe raspberry, dark berry liqueur, spice and plenty of pungent earth, all of which is trimmed in enough wood to notice. There is good power and richness to the robust and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that are shaped by firm but not hard tannins before culminating in a balanced and impressively long finish. This is a big and youthfully austere effort yet my sense is that this will likely be approachable after only 5ish years if desired.
