Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2027-2050, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Haut-Marbuzet has one of the most extrovert aromatics: touches of fresh date and fig infusing the black fruit, a touch of wild mint and fennel. It's complex and well-defined, becoming more refined as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine delineation and crisp acidity. This is a structured and forthright Saint-Estèphe with a grippy finish. It's bold but stylish. I suspected that this might blossom into something special...it has. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Deep browning garnet. A mix of ripe, raisiny fruit and leafy notes and plenty of undergrowth-like evolution. Firm, chewy, with the acidity accentuated by the tannins. Not quite harmonious yet though it should come round. (JH)

Classic St Estèphe from owner Henri Duboscq, brilliant quality that ages well (I have had several 40 year-plus examples of this wine). The old school character of the estate suits vintages such as 2014 that are successful but not exuberant. Black fruits, tight tannins, cedar, slate, spice, raspberry leaf, on the austere side but with character and power. 100% new oak.

Tasted blind. Rather scented and opulent. Neat and rewarding even if this is a little sweeter and fleshier than its peers – though pretty dry and raw on the end. Needs lots of time. (JR)
