Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2018-2028, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2018

From a 50-acre estate in Pessac (it’s actually inside the Bordeaux city limits) owned by Paulin and Isabelle Calvet, the 2014 Picque Caillou checks in as a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot and was made with consulting advice from Denis Dubourdieu. Deep ruby colored with a beautiful perfume of black raspberries, tobacco, dried flowers, and Asian spices, this beauty hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied texture, a rounded, seamless style, building tannin, and a great finish. It benefits from a decant and will keep for another 10-15 years.

The 2014 Chateau Picque Caillou has a fragrant and well-defined, quite complex bouquet with melted tar and graphite infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity and great harmony. This punches above my expectations, showing much more refinement than previous vintages. This is one to watch—a pretty little thing.

Excellent clarity to the fruit. Super-smooth texture, lifted fragrance without being pushy. There's a completeness here which is thoroughly convincing. (RH)

Greenness dominates. Very marked acidity. Medium bodied and lots of citrus peel but a bit uncomfortable to taste now. Bracing. (JR)
