Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2024-2040, Neal Martin, Mar 2024

The 2014 Pavie-Macquin is more youthful than the Duffau Lagarrosse compared side-by-side, with heightened black cherry and cedar fruit and touches of camphor and pine. This has modest delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, modest depth, savory red fruit, orange rind and a touch of Moroccan spice. Perhaps a little more mature than expected, I would personally broach this over the next decade. It is one of the few Saint-Émilions that beckons you back for more. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Evolved bricky colour. Fragrant with undergrowth and cigar box. Tannins are still pretty chewy but there’s balance between structure and fruit at the core. Just slightly marked by the acidity on the finish. (JH)

This remains pretty tight and compact, with blackberry, pomegranate, black cherry, cigar and cocoa bean. Tannins a touch angular, although plenty of life ahead, and enjoyable baked spice notes alongside overt oak grilling. Nicolas Thienpont director and Stéphane Derenoncourt consultant. 36hl/h yield.

Seven years old is young for a wine like Pavie Macquin, but this is already showing layers of blackberry, cherry, grilled earth, liqourice, tobacco leaf, slate, just a multitude of flavours running alongside each other, competing for attention, all carved out and precise in their expression. Not as generous as some vintages at Pavie Macquin, but it is exciting, with the pulses of mineraity along with sweet blackberry puree as it opens. Part of the classic vintages series within this vertical, and is a nuanced wine that asks you to slow down.
