The 2014 Monbrison has a crisp, cedar and sous-bois scented bouquet that opens nicely with aeration: blackberry and raspberry follow suit, becoming quite ferrous in style (brettanomyces?). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, moderate depth, more red fruit in situ compared to its Margaux peers, supple in the mouth with a cohesive, quite saline finish. This is very stylish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Round and plush on the nose. Easy and sweet and nicely balanced. Just a bit dry on the end. (JR)
The 2014 Monbrison had a slightly smudged bouquet at the moment: black fruit, leather and violets, not quite as energetic as its peers at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, saline on the entry with a pinch of spice that builds towards a vibrant finish that finally offers some mineralité and grip on the finish. It just needs to meliorate on the nose to nudge that score upwards.
The 2014 Monbrison is an attractive, midweight Margaux with good depth and complexity. Burly tannins give the wine its slightly rustic feel. Drink it over the next few years.
