Punteggio 89-91/100 · FINE+RARE

Some energy to this. A cool buzz. Clean and cool. Fresh and sweet in the mouth. All here and rather good. Some alcohol, some glycerol. Some texture. Polished and appealing. Joss Fowler, FINE+RARE, April 2015.

Owned by the Cuvelier family of Léoville Poyferré since 1903, today a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, and certainly a name to look out for. This is excellent, absolutely bursting with St Estèphe character, a little subdued still but confident, with shape to its black fruits and tannic structure, and clear potential that is just starting to be realised at 8 years old. Old school, more so than today, but that is also a reflection of the character of the vintage.

45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. 33% new oak for 18 months. Deep crimson with darkest core. Lightly leafy, cedary aroma and the oak shows a little on the palate still, with thicker tannins and a slight chocolate taste. Firm and chewy. (JH)

The 2014 Le Crock is just missing a little detail on the nose: broody, dark berry fruit, hints of graphite but it is missing some charm. The palate is medium-bodied with suppler tannin than its peers. There is plenty of tobacco and spice tinged black fruit with clove and white pepper towards the finish, but overall I would be seeking more precision. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
