Mid crimson. Rather heady and appealing on the nose. Savoury open fruit on the palate. Relatively evolved and gamey. Horses for courses? Just a little sour on the end. (JR)

(a blend of Petit Chapelle, Cherbaudes, Bel Air and Champonnets; aging in 50% new oak): Deep, bright red. Dark berries and a positive gamey quality on the nose, lifted by a violet topnote and complemented by sweet oak. Seamless in the middle if less expressive today than the village blend, showing more medicinal reserve today. Ripe acidity gives this wine excellent early balance. Finishes with fine tannins and good subtle length.
The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru, a blend of the usual four vineyard and raised in 40% new wood, has a pure, floral bouquet with more red cherries, fresh strawberry and a touch of orange zest that lend it a feminine touch. The palate is medium-bodied with super-fine, supple tannins, beautifully pitched acidity and a very elegant finish. Wonderful - this surpasses my expectations by several furlongs.
