(these vines on well-drained soil got very ripe in 2014 and yielded small grapes for the year; aged in 60% new oak): Bright dark red with ruby highlights. Pungent aromas of blackberry, crushed herbs and meat. Plusher in texture than the Gevrey village blend but quite dry, even a bit cool, offering a savory quality to its dark berry and violet flavors. Quite full in the mouth but I wouldn't call this a fruity style. The tannins are ripe and not at all hard.

(50% new oak; Mortet has parcels in all four corners of this cru, with a high percentage of his vines planted on rock and calcaire ; the oldest vines here have now passed the century mark): Good deep red with ruby highlights. Nose dominated by smoky minerality, crushed rock and sexy oak tones. Musky, full and sweet in the mouth, with wild flavors of blackberry, violet and game showing excellent definition and vinosity. The balance of sweetness and acidity here is exhilarating. Sappy, complete premier cru with a strong rocky quality, suave tannins and a pure, rising finish.
From four parcels located in the four corners of the vineyard and matured in 50% new oak, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux was showing just a touch of reduction on the nose when I tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh red cherry and raspberry notes. There is good structure here: solid tannins that impart a sense of density, verging on opacity toward the finish. It will need 4-6 years in bottle before it reaches its drinking plateau, but it will be worth the wait.
