Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a rather straightforward bouquet that lacks the personality and energy displayed by others. There is some agreeable red berry fruit here, but it seems rustic and lacks grace. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy red berry fruit, rough hewn and broad shouldered, a gutsy Chapelle-Chambertin that is missing some breeding. Tasted September 2016.

The 2013 Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru is striking. Expressive floral notes add lift as in a beautifully delineated, translucent Burgundy built on nuance. Pomegranate, cherry pit, mint, cinnamon and wild flowers are pushed forward. The 2013 boasts gorgeous complexity and plenty of nuance, all with enough tannic clout to develop nicely for many years to come.
