Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2020-2030, Jancis Robinson MW, Nov 2017

Mid crimson. Scented and heady. Super charming. On the nose it’s almost Oregonian! But on the palate there is Burgundian structure. Still a clear framework and ambition; this is not a slack Charmes. Well done for espousing grand cru quality. Needs food if you want to drink it now. But just about ready. (JR)

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was cropped October 4-10, partial whole-cluster and matured for 13 months in oak. The nose is quite opulent and showy, although for me, it does not quite have the finesse of the Lavaux Saint Jacques ’13. The palate is medium-bodied with quite rigid tannins, especially for a Charmes-Chambertin, with a touch of hardness on the finish. I suspect that this will improve with bottle age.

Partial whole cluster. 20 days' maceration, 13 months in oak. Ready for bottling. Two growers. Low production. One lot fermented as whole clusters in 500-litre barrel.  Smells sweeter and riper than the Lavaut St-Jacques. More deeply coloured. Some oak sweetness too. Dry, powder-fine tannins, dry and elegant. The tannins are beautiful, firm and should age very well. So elegant and so not trying to please. (JH)
