Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey Chambertin Ostrea from Domaine Trapet has a backward nose compared to its peers, yet the delineation and focus here is appreciable, cranberry and raspberry fruit to the fore. The palate is edgy, nervous on the entry thanks to the thread of acidity. Poised, just a little foursquare at the moment and with moderate depth, this is a Gevrey-Chambertin that just needs more bottle age to fully coalesce. It's a dumb phase at present so give this four or five years and it will surely reach its potential out of barrel.

(from a crop level of about 30 hectoliters per hectare, according to Trapet): Moderately saturated medium red; seemed to take on color with air. High-pitched, tight nose offers enticing perfume of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Juicy and sharply delineated, displaying terrific purity and inner-mouth perfume to its tangy red fruit and floral flavors. At once silky and taut, this terrific wine struck me as like a slightly softer version of the 2010. This parcel includes the domain's oldest vines, planted at a density of 12,700 per hectare (0.8 by 0.8 meter).
(35% vendange entier): Good bright red. Dark fruits on the rather tight nose, with complicating hints of earth, smoke and minerals. Sweet and penetrating, with good thickness of texture to support the wine's firm acidity. Redcurrant, leather, cocoa powder and earth flavors are complicated by smoky minerality. Trapet uses these very old vines as a source of plant material for his other vineyards.
The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea, from vines in Brochon, is quite a bit deeper and more powerful than the straight villages. Cloves, menthol, blue/purple fruit and spices all flesh out in a rich, resonant Burgundy that captures the personality of the year as expressed through these old vines and the classic sense of Trapet structure that informs all the wines here. The Ostrea is an overachiever in 2012, not to mention a very serious villages.
