Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2021-2026, Eric Guido, Vinous, Jun 2021

The 1987 Marsala Superiore Riserva displays a deep orange/golden amber color. It washes over you with a dusty, savory display of exotic curries, crushed hazelnut and hints of clove. It’s silky and pliant in feel, showing a noticeable inner sweetness, counterbalanced by an intensely spicy wave of acids and minerals. This finishes long, bitter and mineral, revealing only hints of roasted nuts and burnt citrus. While still in balance, the 1987 has an edgy and sharp feel to it that, without having tasted it at a younger age, comes across to me today as a dropping out of its fruit component. That said, it will be many, many years before all pleasure is lost.

Wine from Vecchio Samperi, fortified with mistela in 1987. TA 8.46 g/l, RS 60.3 g/l, SO2 24 mg/l. Deep amber-orange. Complex and integrated notes of old leather, milk chocolate, rancio, some wood polish, dried orange peel, cinnamon and pain d’épices . Dense, medium-sweet, with brisk acidity, lots of saltiness, cooked citrus, spice and a smoky-chocolate finish. Long. (TJ)

It’s great to see fine Marsala treated with the respect it deserves. De Bartoli’s 1987 Marsala Superiore Riserva is gorgeous.

Fabulous aromas of dried and brunt orange, salt, and hints of toffee. Some rancio too. It\'s full-bodied with a butter, candied orange and cedar character. Very high in alcohol yet stylish and thought-provoking. Shame Marsala is forgotten for most wine lovers. Drink now.
