Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2001-2009, Robert Parker, Aug 2001

Aged, complex, and subtle is the 1985 Gran Reserve 890. A compelling nose of smoke, earth, plums, tobacco, cherries, and vanillin emerges from this light garnet-colored 1985 that also reveals considerable amber at the edge. It offers complex, savory flavors of spice, faded flowers, and red fruits. There is suppleness yet vivacity to this medium-weight wine that is all finesse and restraint. Although not for everybody, it is a brilliant example of this style of Rioja. Look for the 1985 to continue to drink well for 7-8 years. This wine has historically been made about three times per decade, according to de Aranzábal, but the '80s were an atypically strong period, with the 890 made in '81, '82, '85, '87 and '89; this '85, he adds, is the best of the decade. Amber-edged red. Superripe yet thoroughly ethereal aromas of oak spice, citrus hints, strawberry, plum, redcurrant, minerals and tobacco; penetrating and complex. Brilliant clarity and class on the palate: all cut and elegance. Bracing acids give the multidimensional flavors unusually sharp definition. Very long and strong on the aftertaste. Offers another aromatic dimension entirely. I also retasted the superb '82, which could not quite match the sheer grip of the '85, but still retained impressively firm backbone and lovely smoothness.
