This is from the vines that now belong to François Pinault's Dom Eugénie. Cough medicine nose. Treacle toffee. Quite brown but lots of lusciousness. Very sweet and chewy but now a bit dry on the finish (as many 1990 red burgundies are actually, although this may be because this came from a domestic cellar). (JR)
The young Philippe Engel continues to show a more confident hand when it comes to making stylish red burgundies. I was immensely impressed with the lavish black-cherry and plum fruitiness of the Clos de Vougeot. It is a fuller-bodied wine, with more tannin lurking behind the wall of fruit. Unctuous, yet medium-bodied, with fine power and definition, this is a wine to drink over the next decade . Various American importers.
