Punteggio 90+/100 · Da bere 2019-2027, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2016

Healthy medium red. Reticent red fruit and smoke aromas began a bit subdued but displayed building mineral lift with air. A step up in cut and precision over the basic village wine but also tighter and more tannic today. Juicy raspberry and violet flavors are accented by a hint of blood orange. In a distinctly cool style but with plenty of density.

Bright, dark red. Ripe aromas of red raspberry and minerals are complicated by sexy saline and coffee nuances. Juicy and precise but pliant on the palate, conveying a lightly salty character to the dark berry and violet flavors. At once more fruity and more stony than the basic village offering, boasting good inner-mouth tension. Finishes with a serious spine of tannins but no hardness. This has the class of a smaller-scaled premier cru.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Clos d'Eugénie is more expressive on the nose compared to the village cru: a mixture of red and black fruit, subtle violet notes developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, well-judged acidity and a linear, very pure finish that displays good length. It is the purity here that stands out.

33% whole bunch. 40% new oak. Just five pièces. Clos d'Eugénie is not a registered name; a commercial name. Very dark crimson. Quite wild and biodynamic on the nose. Racy and sophisticated. Polished and super fruity but with real gloss and nerve. Very good but on the verge of being almost too opulent. (JR)
