Damoy's Chambertin is fabulous in 2012. This is an unusually bright, vibrant 2012, with a decidedly energetic sense of lift that only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. Dark red and purplish-toned fruit, crushed flowers and mint are all super-expressive. Chalky tannins only add to the wine's energy and pure drive. Today, the 2012 is quite embryonic and in need of considerable cellaring.

A stunning wine, the 2012 Chambertin is endowed with superb purity, intensity and depth. Rose petal, violet and mint notes lead to darker and more savory notes as the 2012 opens up in the glass. Hints of iron, new leather and smoke all make an appearance as the wine opens up. With time in the glass, the aromas and flavors turn brighter and more floral, adding an attractive upper register that plays off the sheer depth of the fruit. The Chambertin is remarkably poised for such a big wine. It is also at the tail end of its malolactic fermentation, so readers should take this note as a general indication of what looks to be a fabulous wine in the making.
Damoy observed that this had only just finished its malo and was thus quite reduced and gassy. There is good richness, size, weight and density to the powerful and intensely mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the mouth coating, austere and serious finish. This is solidly well-structured but not hard or aggressive, though the gas makes this a bit tricky to read. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2024+
