Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2022-2038, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jan 2022

Another signpost vintage where only the most adapted terroirs were able to survive. This has less grip than the others in the cool series, but we are in the same family of aromatics, with cool blue rather than red or black fruits. Tobacco, blueberry and raspberry leaf, this has juice and is delicate with mouthwatering floraility of the finish. Subtle, well handled, but less life ahead. Part of the cool vintages series within this vertical. 80% new oak.

The 2013 Pavie-Macquin is, of course, quite a bit younger than the 2002 and the 2007 that it is grouped with in this flight. Even so, I can't help notice its focus and persistence. Perhaps in time the 2013 will resemble some of the older wines in this vertical, but today my impression is that it will age more gracefully. It's hard to know if the 2013 shows this way because of its relative youth or the greater precision gained by winemaking team in 20+ harvests. I suspect it is a little bit of both.

Tasted blind. Dark greyish crimson. Riper, darker fruited than some but a bit metallic. Better, and better fruit, on the palate, though not terribly long. A little chewy on the finish. (JH)

The 2013 Pavie-Macquin has a light but detailed and pure redcurrant and cranberry-scented bouquet, suggestions of rose petal developing with aeration. The sample tasted at the property was showing a little more precision than others I have encountered. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, edgy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, a little brittle in texture but with tension on the smooth and refreshing finish. This is a worthy addition to the Right Bank 2013s and it should give a dozen years of pleasure. It deserves a round of applause for overcoming such a difficult growing season. Tasted February 2016.
