Punteggio 88+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2014

(Philippe Roty label): Good full medium red. Blacker fruit, licorice and violet on the nose, accented by pepper and herbs. Tightly wound, minty and peppery; a bit lean in the middle, showing less give than the last couple of 2011 samples. Some herbal pungency contributes to the wine's juicy quality but cuts off the fruit on the back end. This calls for three or four years of patience.

Good bright, deep red-ruby. Cool, reticent aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. Dense and sweet, with saline and iron notes contributing complexity. The slowly mounting finish is long and tactile, and the tannins are ripe.

Here the nose is similar to that of the Les Quartiers save for it being just a bit more elegant and a bit less obviously toasty. There is also good punch and detail to the delicious flavors that are supported by slightly finer-grained tannins on the rustic and ever-so-mildly toasty finish. This is likely to harmonize with a few years of cellar time and is worth a look. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2019+
