Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Neal Martin, Aug 2023

The 2013 Le Gay feels distant and lacks real personality on the nose (the stablemate of La Violette actually shows more fruit). The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, more red than the black fruit, and supple with a smooth texture on the finish. Given the growing season, it lacks some personality, but the palate is commendable. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting.

Nuanced garnet. Some fresh herbaceousness on the nose. A sweet start. Unambitious but perhaps that's a good thing in 2013! The balance is fine. This is a low-key red bordeaux showing some signs of good-quality oak. Minor key but good balance. (JR)

Soft raspberry colour, with a welcoming nose of gently-smoked meat and autumnal fruits. Fresh acidities, with mandarin and pomgranate, slides to a soft finish with the undergrowth and earth becoming more apparent as it opens. No need to wait, as is true with all of these, but there is charm here.

Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Dark and fresh on the nose. A bit stalky on the palate and relatively light but the tannins are light enough to end with balance. (JH)

Chateau Le Gay

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
