A weightless, gracious wine, the 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets is striking in its beauty. Sweet, perfumed notes graces the palate as this silky, impeccably balanced Burgundy opens up in the glass. The style is delicate and refined throughout, with plenty of breadth and texture, but no sense of heaviness at all. Plum, blueberry and violet meld into darker suggestions of licorice and smoke that add gravitas on the finish. What a gorgeous wine this is.

(from 45-year-old vines, according to Boillot): Good bright medium red. Deep, wild nose offers aromas of red cherry, redcurrant, leather, earth and game bird. Creamy, full and densely packed and essentially easygoing, combining compelling sweetness with lovely mid-palate delicacy. Finishes impressively long, with very fine, smooth tannins and a suggestion of leather. Perhaps not the last word in grip but this wine should offer substantial early appeal.
A perfumed and really quite pretty nose of violets, plum, earth, wet stone and wild dark berries gives way to pure and vibrant middle weight mineral-inflected flavors that possess a distinct salinity on the firm and tension-filled finish. Tasted: Jan 14, 2013. Drink: 2018+
