Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2023-2030, Neal Martin, Aug 2023

The 2013 Troplong Mondot has a fragrant nose: briary and light blackberry scents, tobacco and sous-bois . Not complex, but there is more presence than the Canon. The palate is medium-bodied with thick tannins. Good weight in the mouth, yet there is an apparent lack of tension and finesse. Again, this is rather monotone on the finish and runs out of ideas quickly. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting.

Glowing crimson. Sweet, ripe nose. But it really has a great big hole in the middle before a rather drying, short finish. (JR)

Underpowered nose with herbal notes and tannins that haven't quite integrated. Speaks of the toughness of the year. Sleek and smooth but in this line-up, it's a clear outlier. Miracles might improve this, but I suspect it is not worth keeping much. (RH)

Ripe ruby cherry colour, intense for the vintage, reflecting the natural power of the Troplong soils - and no doubt helped by the 100% new oak, plus malolactic fermentation in barrels (of both 228l and 500l sizes). The oak dominates and constricts, giving sandalwood and grilled tar notes that overpower because there isn't the depth of fruit underneath. This is a 2013 that tries extremely hard to overshoot the vintage, but needed to change its winemaking formula to do so. Michel Rolland consultant.
